ESG investing is an overarching investment approach that incorporates environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) criteria through the investment process and evaluates how effectively companies address these issues. Yet, there is more than one way the ESG discipline can be put into practice, and sustainable/responsible/impact investors all have different goals for the application of ESG.

Join us on June 23rd at 11 am as we explore the sustainable investing landscape as a whole, and discuss the "how", "what", and "why" of this growing industry.

    Topics Discussed:

History and evolution of responsible investing

    • How ESG investing works
    • Practicality and applicability for a non-expert investor
    • The societal and environmental impacts of responsible investing
    • Responsible investing careers

    Our speakers:

Sylvia Panek (Natural Investments, LLC): Sylvia has worked in socially responsible investing for fifteen years, starting at Green America and continuing at US SF – The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment. After more than a decade of advancing and educating financial professionals on sustainable and responsible investment practices, she joined the financial advisory firm Natural Investments, LLC.

Sylvia serves on the board of 350 Chicago, a climate change group advocating for divestment from fossil fuel companies by institutions and individuals. She also participates on the board for Envest Microfinance, a domestic fund extending microfinance credit in developing countries. She completed a Sustainability MBA at Marylhurst University

Dan Nielsen (Morningstar) : Dan is Head of Product Management, ESG Indexes at Morningstar where he leads the ESG indexes product strategy. Before joining Morningstar, Dan was a Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Specialist at Great Lakes Advisors, where he oversaw the firm’s ESG integration and responsible investing initiatives. Dan has been focused on sustainable and responsible investing since 2005 and has held previous roles as the Director of Socially Responsible Investing at Christian Brothers Investment Services and led shareholder advocacy for a $16 billion pension fund at Wespath (part of United Methodist Church.)

He serves on the Advisory Board of the CEO Investor Forum, on the Leadership Council of Loyola University Chicago’s Baumhart Center, and as a Baumhart Scholar Mentor. Dan is also an adjunct professor at Loyola’s Quinlan School of Business where he teaches ESG investing. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

    Our moderator:

Ed Byrne (Net Impact Chicago): Ed is a member of Net Impact Chicago’s leadership board. Ed spent the first year and a half of his career as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch and is currently a software and data sales consultant at Morningstar.
